2015 Avtonomi Akadimia (ongoing)

Art-as-education is the next step of progress after the phaenomenon of the activist art.

Avtonomi Akadimia a socio-cybernetic chronopolitical sculpture. It operates on the topos of origin of the patriarchal concept of the occidental pedagogy, that is, in the original garden of Plato’s Academy, Akadimia Platonos, an archaeological site in Athens.

2014 Gods And Writing Around The Mediterranean

In collaboration with Moritz Mattern

The video announces a book “Gods and Writing around the Mediterranean”, edited my Friedrich Kittler †, Joulia Strauss, Peter Weibel, Peter Berz and Gerhard Scharbert, Fink Publishing. The book assembles scietific contributions to the Symposion In Memoriam Friedrich Kittler which took place on October 19-20, 2012 at the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe. At the same time, it is a documentation of Strauss’ „lectureperformance“ at the Symposion. It is entitled “To the loud dumb“ and was held in the deaf-mute language. It sets a wild, but precise relation between an Asamblea and Symposion, anarchy and pre-socratic thinking against the empire, activism of the Occupy and the one of Jesus…

2013 Global Activism

global aCtIVISm
Eine Ausstellung im ZKM | Museum für Neue Kunst
Projektteam: Peter Weibel und Andreas Beitin, Andrea Buddensieg, Dietrich Heissenbüttel, Sabiha Keyif, Elisabeth Klotz, Sarah Maske, Linnea Semmerling, Joulia Strauss, Tatiana Volkova, Philipp Ziegler

global aCtIVISm

Jahrhunderts an. Weiter lesen

Aus dem Vorwort: „Brothers and Sisters, this is not a magazine. It is a tool for political practice in the current global revolution. This special issue of Krytyka Polityczna is complementary to the exhibition “Global Activism” at the Center for Arts and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe. While the team of ZKM – as an institution – conducts the analysis from the outside, we provide revolutionary knowledge by highlighting the perspectives of those actually involved in the various struggles against the politico-economic powers that be.“ Die Ausgabe ist online:

2011 Anamorphose Monument To Chelsea Manning

The video sculpture is a dynamic anamorphous monument to Chelsea Manning—the innocent, highly intelligent manchild. It has been conceived while Manning, back then, Bradley, was tortured with solitary confinement, no-touch psychic disturbance and subjected to forced nudity—for debriefing the world on the Vietnam-esque activities of the US in Iraq. While the media have been distorting the political meaning of Bradley Manning’ audacious deed, the technique of anamorphosis has reassembled the image of Manning and her aim of leaking the documents on war crime by letting her speak:

Manning 3D: “… well, it was forwarded … to WikiLeaks and god knows what happens now. Hopefully worldwide discussion, debates, and reforms. If not, than we’re doomed as a species. I will officially give up on the society we have if nothing happens.”

What happened is nothing but a couple of new wars in the society we have. So, we are certainly doomed as a species. But the exceptional idealists we have tune our story to be not tragic only, but also extremely beautiful.

2010 Aporias of Love

A young Greek philosopher wondering about Joulia Strauss: “Who are you?! You are the discourse itself”.

“Inaugurational Performance of the Oldest Ancient Greek Music Fragment in Berlin”, the live contribution to the exhibition, included a song, a talk, which gave an insight into the beauty of structure of the pythagorean machine of love, as well as a minimal dance involving a performance dress sculpture.

The dress was proportioned in a lydian scale and and was part on a complex process of furtherdevelopment of music notation Joulia Strauss conducts together with a philosopher Martin Carlé. The performance dress sculpture was left in the exhibition space as a trace of ethos now lacking dynamics, but reminding of a presence. Next to it, a series of photographs were on display. They executed the operation of shorting with the onlastig discourse on “Aporias of Love”, by beeing the most aporetic embodiments from the book of the same title by Marcus Steinweg. These series celibratively transgress the borders between epistemé und techné, theory and praxis, philosophy and art.

Joulia Strauss experimented applying the theory of the subject: if the romantic love is a fundamentalism of the modernity, then the calligraphic quotations on the body of the subject are its traditional logocentric ornaments…

2010 Welcome to the Mediterranean Basin

“It is a big momentum of transition. A change in art that starts from Athens. How happy I am, and proud of the artists. They have deep knowledge and are not driven by the art market, but by the Gods.
(Strauss, Sky Radio Athens, 2010)

The dragon Python has not been killed by the young Apollon, only forced him to the ground. He has woken up to the riots and seeks to assist in the cultural revolution. The title “Welcome to the Mediterranean Basin” is a call for overcomming the colonial obsession of posession. No continents, no boders, just the oneness of the sea.

A large scale 3d-looking wire sculpture is part of Strauss’ sculptural system of “Mathematical Operation Animals”. It assembles five couples of hypolydian turtles and five lydian dogs in a circle. These characters embody the structure of the modulation of the Second Delphic Hymn to Apollon, which is otherwise hidden by signs and no longer perceivable to our ears. Ancient Greek music notation is, first of all, a notation of harmony. Therefore it can be
(per)formed as sculpture.

Video documentation of the sculpture:

An archaic dog carries the melody used in the rituals of 600 BC. It hesitantly touches two turtles, lydian scale of part one changes into the hypolydian two and so on… Limbs of the animal bodies display the dynamics of melody and explore the beautiful moments of transition between scales (modulation) as different states of hybrid beings. The turtle’s fin (oerótato pterígio), simultaneously is a leg of a dog (skiláki) which in turn becomes the aristocratic foot of a swan from the hypophrygian scale. At the end of the archaic part dragon Python “helps” Cultural Revolution and changes the classical part, composed by Limenios, furtherdeveloping the myth, the hymn, and the sculpture. The final, tenth part, is a wild dog (2010 CE) ouroborously finalising the composition by biting into its ansestor’s tail.

“Art that thinks, is always an art, which knows of its interplay with the media and lays it open. Hidden in media, it lets Physis reveal itself”, as Friedrich Kittler writes in a text, dedicated to Joulia Strauss. Her work, in opposition to subjectivity without content, usually reveals universally valid knowledge, but in very specific self invented languages of today.

Cultural Revolution neither understands itself as a “monument in the permanent state of becoming… to which every new passenger can add a further stone”, nor does it rethink itself as a “complete circular movement designating an orbital period with a begin and an end”. It is far from seeing violence as a manifestation of the Gods, but it questions the claim that art lacks the emanation of political energy. Image war is part of the war.

The floating Sculpture appears to become pure light, as thousands of spectrum particles cover its wire surface. It throws shadows in 3 directions and, moves with the melody, turning the exhibition space into a 3d animation. This speaks to an Ethos that contains a model of relations between characters in different stages of transformation,
resistance and insurrection, and calls on Friedrich Hölderlins “reliable laws of beauty” into a Presence. This dispositive organises the dispersed reality of the Empire by the rhythm of the Second Delphic Hymn to Apollon, which
is also a celebrative and poietic manifesto of artists in our dearly beloved Athens.

2010 TK News – 5 Athens

In collaboration with Moritz Mattern

After the cultural revolution the country is ruled by artists. Key positions are occupied by protagonists of the dynamic are scene of Athens. In einem Sci-Fi scenario, but in documentary style, actual processes in Greece are unveiled.

The dramaturgy is replaces by a “Dynamic Helones Structure”, turtle shell sections cover separated scenes. 22 year old prime minister and actor is interviewed at the place that has become a senctuary of our time, where a harmless teenager was shot by a policeman in december 2008. Alexandros Grigoropoulos street is the spot from which the initial insurrection against the situation in Greece and in Europe has sparked.

The new director of the New Acropolis Museum explains, why from now on exhibitions of contemporary art will take place in such archaeological and philological place. The museum’s curator speaks about the end of time as well as about the sculpture “Kouros Narkotikos. A Monuent to the Junkies of Omonia”. Performance artist executes an educational program for the policemman by singing an ancient Greek “Hymn to the Sun” to them at their working positions. Video artist films this with a camera hidden in the eye of the skull of his belt. Both are attacked by the police and find themselves in a military hospital. A new law “for the abolishment of the usage of chemicals by the police” has not yet been enforced yet. The doctor diagnoses the “New Normality”, a state that will reach all the inhabitants of the Mediterranen Basin. Symptoms: cascades of images, onlasting affect, end of logos.

2009 First Delphic Hymn to Apollon

The video navigates through a fairy Landscape compiled out of views of Delphi. Listening to the song reconstructed after Ancient fragments found in the area, the viewer encounters mathematical operation animals proportioned after “pythagorean” enharmonic tunes.

Animals of this sculptural system appear as extatic visions differentiated by specifics of their tunes and geographical positions. The song culminates in a dance of the so-called “All-embracing Dorian Sum-Cat” along the tones of melody which unveals its specific character.
